    APHA's Government Relations department, in coordination with its members and affiliated state and regional public health associations, works with key decision-makers to address today’s emerging and ongoing public health concerns. The department provides resources and support for members and Affiliates to be effective public health advocates. APHA internships are unpaid and located in Washington, DC.


    The Government Relations internship position offers students an excellent opportunity to learn about the intersection of advocacy, the legislative and public policy process and public health practice. The intern will provide the government relations staff with assistance in grassroots advocacy efforts, the development of fact sheets, action alerts and other advocacy materials to advance APHA advocacy priority areas. The intern will be responsible for representing APHA at congressional events and contributing to policy research and analysis of legislation, regulations and potentially court cases. Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to attend coalition meetings, meet with APHA staff to learn more about public health, and work with the state public health associations on grassroots activities.


    APHA’s Government Relations Department offers one internship per semester to a qualified student. Candidates should be working toward a bachelors, graduate or postgraduate degree. Candidates should have excellent written and oral communications skills and a strong interest in advocacy, government relations and public health issues. To assure that the intern maximizes her or his experience, we require that students work a minimum of 25 hours a week.
